The OsiriX Foundation
Auntminnie has a positive note on the up-and-coming Osirix Foundation, in the process of being set up to “help formalize the process involved in vetting the various OsiriX code additions that are developed around the world, and determining which contributions are added to the next version of the software”. OsiriX, deriving from the original multi-platform Osiris, is a pretty good piece of software that is worth a lot of attention from anybody who doesn’t need to be spoon fed (although there are some design decisions I’m not sure of – Mac only and no HL7 spring to mind).
But anything Open Source (particularly when as successful as Osirix) is liable to be subjected to FUD attacks from proprietary vendors, so any process which provides demonstrable and transparent quality assurance can only help to address the inequity in access to good tools.
There doesn’t seem to be anything on the Osirix site about it, but I’m looking forward to seeing more details on how the foundation will work. If it is intended to help fight the FUD, it’ll need to be a little more sophisticated that just a little SVN admin.
A couple of points I disagree with in the AM article, though:
